Focus on jewel, eye ware markets
<p><font size="2"><strong>Bhaskar Bhat, MD, Titan Industries Ltd.<p>Bhaskar Bhat, managing director of Titan Industries, has been associated with the Tata Group’s watch project since 1983. The project later became Titan Watches and is now Titan Industries. He is the man behind Titan’s aggressive diversification programme. Mr Bhat has chalked out a strategy for growth in the unorganised jewellery and eye ware market while consolidating the watch business in India and abroad.<p>Excerpts from an interview with K.S. ANANDAN:<p>You started as a watch company, but today Titan has diversified into jewellery, eye ware and precision engineering products business. Going forward, where do you see the watch business<p>The watch business has been our first and most profitable business. The watch market in India is estimated at Rs 3,000 crore. Therefore, significant expa-nsion in this business is possible only through exploring the market, which we are doing. We believe that growth comes out of diversification and we have div-ersified into jewellery and thereafter into eye ware. We are the market leader in the watch business for the last 15 years and the market has grown with us. With a leadership position in all watch segments, we have been successful in this mission.<p>Any plans of entering yet another product category<p>Watch, jewellery and eye ware products make us a lifestyle accessory company. We are not looking at any new product categories right now. We have a big agenda to expand in all our product segments. For instance, we intend to take eye care brand Eye Plus and mass market the jewellery brand nationally. Our overseas ventures in all these categories have to mature, so the agenda for the next three years is to rapidly grow all over.<p>It is said that the jewellery and eye ware industry are highly unorganised<p>Well, when we entered the market, whether it was watches in the beginning and jewellery thereafter and now eye ware, transparency and consumer awareness of these products were quite low. We were the first to bring service and value to the consumers in the watch and jewellery segments.<p>Now, we are doing the same thing in the eye ware. We are just one-year old with 22 stores in the Rs 2,500-crore eye ware market. The market is totally unorganised and we are the first corporate house to enter it. The incidence of eye care and eye ware need is very high in India. It is estimated that 30 per cent of people need vision correction. Only 85 million people wear glasses. At present, this segment generates below Rs 50 crore to our top line and it will reach Rs 250 crore in the next two years.<p>How are your overseas operations doing<p>We are operating in Europe, the Middle East and Far East. We are the No. 1 brand in quartz watches in Oman and No. 2 brand in Dubai and Qatar. We have entered Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In the US, we have launched a pilot jewellery store in Chicago, the largest jewellery market in the world. The next one will come up in New Jersey soon. After our experience in Europe the company closed down its European operations, we are little careful in new markets, so we have pilot projects before expanding. Overseas operations are very profitable for us and we will continue to expand.<p>There are strong regional players with large retail formats and national aspirations operating in the jewellery space. Titan’s format is small. What is your growth strategy for the jewellery business<p>Our strategy has always been to be different: Differentiating ourselves from the competition. What helped our businesses succeed is exceptional design and quality, easy accessand brand equity. We have more stores than any of the regional players in any major city. Nationally, we are the No. 1 jewellery retailer. The jewellery market is estimated at Rs 70,000 crore and we have tremendous opportunity to grow. We expect revenue of Rs 3,000 crore from the jewellery business alone in this fiscal. We will grow fairly well in this business.<p>Titan’s counterfeited watches are available in the market. What is your strategy to protect your brand image<p>We are increasing our presence across the country through franchisee mode. And we are also addressing the needs of the lower-end market by introducing a different brand Sonata at a lower price.<p>What is your revenue target in this fiscal<p>It will cross $1 billion-mark this financial year.
